One running note per project

Goal at the top, milestones as checklists, everything else in a dated log.

Projects die in scattered places: half the state in chat, a quarter in email, the rest in someone's head. A running project note is the antidote — one page that always answers "where are we and what's next?" without a project-management tool to feed.

Goal, milestones, log

The template opens with the goal in one or two sentences — the reason the project exists, frozen at the top so scope discussions have an anchor. Below it, milestones as checklist items: each one a concrete, completable outcome, ticked off in Preview as they land. Everything else goes in the log: dated entries, newest at the bottom, written like a captain's log. Status updates, blockers, reversals — the log absorbs it all without reorganization.

A worked example

"Redesign onboarding" as a goal; milestones - [ ] Draft new flow, - [ ] Usability test with five users, - [ ] Ship behind flag; log entries like Oct 20 — test 3 cancelled, recruiting two more. When someone asks for status, read the goal, count the ticks, quote the last two log lines. That is the whole status meeting.

Link outward instead of duplicating

The project note is a hub, not a container. Meeting minutes stay in meeting notes, decisions live in a decision log, background reading in reading notes — the project note links to all of them with [[...]] and the backlinks panel shows the web forming around it. Copying content in is how project notes rot; linking keeps each note current in exactly one place.

Closing a project

When the goal is met or abandoned, write a final log line saying which, tick the remaining milestones or delete them deliberately, and archive the note. Archived projects stay searchable — six months later, the log is the only honest record of what actually happened.
